Jonathan Luczycki

I wanted to bring some attention to an artist that was featured at Artease who I unfortunately did not meet there at the time but after the fact. Mr. Johnathan Luczycki. My boyfriend and I were in aww of the perspective that he painted. We were most attracted to the colors in this piece. This is a short bio from his web site
First things first, your asking yourself, how do you pronounce that last name. Luczycki. Is it Lu-sit-key? Lou-chez-ki? Woo-chin-ski!?!

Here's a trick. Say it like this, don't "Loose-this-key". Loose this key. Luczycki. Good, got it? Let's move on.

Born in Springfield, OR in the fall of 1980, Jonathan Edward Luczycki was drawing before the age of three and hasn’t put the pencil down since. Greatly influenced by his father’s love for nature & gardening, to his mother’s landscape paintings, and by all the early American illustrators and comic book artists, his life has always been surrounded with art.

“I believe artists have a responsibility to provide the world with beauty, originality and truth. It literally makes my stomach cringe to see so many artists today emulate another’s style. Whether I’m painting a portrait or a landscape, I try my best to do it in a new and exciting way.”

Since moving to Southern California nearly five years ago, Jonathan grew fascinated with the early California impressionists and this thing called plein air painting. En plein air is a French expression which means "in the open air", and is used to describe the act of painting in the outside environment rather than indoors, such as in a studio.

“I am fascinated by the effects of light in a natural environment and I love the challenge of capturing the mood before the light changes, especially at dawn and dusk. So many landscape artist work from photos, and that’s fine, but by painting from direct observation you learn things a photo could never teach you. If I’m painting the ocean, I have to smell it, I want to feel the sun and wind surround my easel.”

Jonathan works in several mediums, and is not known for just one style. Academically trained as a professional illustrator, the human figure and portraiture continue to captivate him and he constantly strives to paint them in new and exciting ways. He has been studying anatomy and has been involved in figure drawing classes and workshops on a constant basis for over a decade.

Jonathan Luczycki/Loose this key, has had several solo and group shows along the west coast since 2002, from Portland, Oregon to Laguna Beach and L.A. Since 2005 he has built relationships with collectors on a national and international scale. In September of 2008 his work will be featured at the A&D Gallery in London.

Jonathan Edward Luczycki is a member of LPAPA(Laguna Plein Air Painters Association) and a member of SOCALPAPA(Southern California Plein Air Painters Association).

He resides and works out of his studio in Costa Mesa, CA painting landscapes by day and portraits by night.

If you get a chance check his work out! He also has an upcoming event at The Hive Gallery
